I was beyond blessed today. Cav has had some issues with his prosthetic (the longer leg) hurting. We were afraid we needed to go back up to Denver. Today I talked to Cav's PT and she helped me figure out, he must have had a charlie horse in his calf. While she was rubbing it she realized how many sensory issues he has.
Our appt should have ended at 11 am - we walked out at 11:39 with a ton of information on sensory issues and how to deal with it. We now know to use deep pressure and to "ground" the joint when holding his limb. We are going to try earphones at the next group outing. We learned that swinging for 5 mintues will calm him, and to place pressure on his shoulders (downward) will help him control his body. She told us why he overly touches some people and seeks out inappropriate situations.
She gave me tools, understanding and hope. I am beyond thankful for those who love their job and are willing to go above and beyond!

Holy cow! That is a huge blessing. Now I have lots of questions. Do you think the same information is available for me to look at on the internet. We did shots today. Sensory is on my hot topic list.
ReplyDeleteWow...how encouarging! I'm dealing with a very emotional girl today...she was doing sooo good but took a downward attitude spiral today :(
ReplyDeleteKnowing she has sensory issues makes this post very interesting to me...feel free to share more specifics if you feel led ;)
And COME ON TA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would love to hear more about this and what you can do to help...our Analina overly touches strangers (pets them constantly) and also seeks out inappropriate situations.

ReplyDeleteTry a weighted vest. A friend of mine' son also have a lot of sensory issues. THe weighted vest helps during the day and at night he uses a weighted blanket at night helps him to sleep. They have been worthy their weight in gold to her.
ReplyDeleteSorry I deleted first shot at writing this because my typing was bad.
I am so thankful for you! We have been figuring out our son'sensory issues over the last 6 months since the Empowered to Connect Conference and what a blessing it has been to help us understand who he is.
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to figure out Cav's leg issue, I am calling Mr. Terry today because we have an arm issue:)
Try reading the Out-of-Sync Child by Carol stock kranowitz. Really helped give you ideas on how the child feels when having sensory issues and what can be do to help with it.
